All five cables use magnetic connections, but they are not interchangeable across generations. They also differ in charging capability, connector type, data support, and what they are designed to handle.

Before getting into the individual comparisons, there are a few things that apply to the older cables.
The XL, 2.0 and Spark all had three magnetic tips: USB-C, Lightning and Micro-USB.
However, the tips were not cross-compatible. An XL tip could not be used with a 2.0 cable, and a 2.0 tip could not be used with an XL cable. The same principle applies when comparing the older systems with the newer MAX generation.
The three older cables, also supported data transfer and CarPlay/Android Auto, but none supported video display.
VOLTA XL vs. VOLTA 2.0
The XL and 2.0 were released only months apart, but they took different approaches to magnetic charging.
VOLTA XL
The VOLTA XL launched in September 2018.
It was designed primarily as a high-powered USB-C cable, particularly for devices such as USB-C laptops. The XL brought a magnetic breakaway connection to USB-C charging, giving users a way to disconnect the cable without pulling the device along with it.
Unlike the 2.0, the XL uses a fixed USB-C end.
It still came with interchangeable magnetic tips for USB-C, Lightning and Micro-USB, but those tips belonged to the XL system and could not be transferred toa 2.0 cable.
VOLTA 2.0
The VOLTA 2.0 launched in January 2019 as the successor to the original VOLTA 1.0.
Its focus was broader device compatibility. It used a fixed USB-A end and interchangeable magnetic tips for USB-C, Lightning and Micro-USB devices.
The 2.0 also introduced 5A fast charging, stronger N52 neodymium magnets and improved durability.
This made it a different proposition from the XL. The XL was designed around higher-power USB-C devices, while the 2.0 was designed to cover more of the devices people charged every day.

VOLTA 2.0 vs. VOLTA Spark
The VOLTA Spark launched in 2020, continuing the magnetic charging system while moving further into higher-power USB-C charging.
Spark kept the three interchangeable magnetic tips found on the 2.0:
- USB-C
- LIghtning
- Micro-USB
But, like the XL, Spark uses a fixed USB-C cable end rather than the USB-A end found on the 2.0.
The charging architecture also changed. The 2.0 was built around 5A fast charging for a broad range of smaller devices, while Spark added USB-C Power Delivery capability for higher-wattage devices.
The tips are still generation-specific. Spark tips cannot be used with a 2.0 cable, and 2.0 tips cannot be used with Spark.

VOLTA XL vs. VOLTA Spark
The XL and Spark have more in common than the XL and 2.0.
Both use a fixed USB-C cable end, both support USB-C Power Delivery, and both use interchangeable USB-C, Lightning and Micro-USB magnetic tips.
The difference is mainly where they sit in the product timeline.
XL came first in 2018 as a high-powered USB-C solution. Spark followed in 2020 with a newer generation of the same general concept.
Their magnetic tips are also not interchangeable. Having the same three tip types does note mean the tips themselves are compatible.

VOLTA Spark vs. VOLTA MAX
This is where the difference between the older generation and the current MAX system becomes much clearer.
Spark supports magnetic charging, interchangeable tips, data transfer and USB-C Power Delivery.
The VOLTA MAX takes those capabilities considerably further.
MAX supports up to 240W Power Delivery, up to 20Gbps data transfer through USB 3.2, and 4k display output.
It also uses N54 neodymium magnets and a newer magnetic connector system.
The result is a cable that is no longer limited to charging and basic data transfer. MAX can handle demanding laptop charging, high-speed file transfers and display connections through the same magnetic connection.

VOLTA MAX vs. VOLTA MAX Lite
MAX and MAX Lite are the current-generation VOLTA cables, but they are designed for different use cases.
The VOLTA MAX is built around performance from a single connection.
The VOLTA MAX Lite changes the setup by putting two magnetic charging heads on one cable.
VOLTA MAX
MAX has one magnetic head and supports up to 240W Power Delivery.
It also supports 20Gbps data transfer and 4K display output, making it the better choice when you need maximum performance from one cable.
For example, if your setup involves a high-powered laptop, external storage and a monitor, MAX gives you the charging, data and display capabilities needed for that type of setup.
VOLTA MAX Lite
MAX Lite takes a different approach.
Instead of adding more performance to one connection, it gives you two connections from one cable.
It has:

- One 90-degree magnetic head
- Up to 100W combined power when charging two devices

This makes MAX Lite particularly useful when you regularly need to charge two devices at once.

Are VOLTA's Magnetic Tips Compatible Across Cables?
No.
This is important if you have accumulated VOLTA cables and spare tips over the years. The fact that two cables use the same tip types does not mean their tips are interchangeable.
For example, the VOLTA XL, VOLTA 2.0 and VOLTA Spark all have USB-C, Lightning and Micro-USB tips, but each generation uses its own tip system.
XL tips do not work with 2.0 cables. 2.0 tips do not work with XL cables.
The same applies when moving from the older generations to the current MAX system. The MAX and MAX Lite use the current VOLTA tip standard.
Do the Older VOLTA Cables Support Data Transfer?
Yes.
The VOLTA XL, VOLTA 2.0 and VOLTA Spark all support data transfer.
However, none of these three older cables supports video display.
That is one of the major differences between the older lineup and the current VOLTA MAX.
MAX adds up to 20Gbps data transfer and 4K display output, giving it capabilities that go beyond charging and standard data connections.
Do VOLTA XL, 2.0 and Spark Support CarPlay and Android Auto?
Yes.
All three support CarPlay and Android Auto.
This means their magnetic connections can be used for compatible wired automotive connections, in addition to their charging functions.
The current MAX and MAX Lite also support CarPlay and Android Auto.
Which VOLTA Cable Should You Choose?
Choose VOLTA MAX if performance comes first
MAX is the better choice if you need the highest charging power, fast data transfer or display output.
With up to 240W Power Delivery, 20Gbps data transfer and 4K display output, it is the most capable single-head cable in the lineup.
Choose VOLTA MAX Lite if you regularly charge two devices
MAX Lite makes more sense if your priority is convenience when charging multiple devices.
Its two magnetic heads let you connect two devices to one cable and deliver up to 100W combined power.
It also gives you the flexibility of a straight head and a 90-degree elbow head, depending on how your devices are positioned.
Keep your VOLTA 2.0, XL or Spark if it still does what you need
Older does not automatically mean unusable.
If your existing VOLTA cable is working well with your devices, there is no requirement to replace it.
The reason to move to MAX or MAX Lite is the additional capability: higher power, faster data, display support on MAX, or two-device charging on MAX Lite
