Magnetic Laptop Cable Comparison
Not every magnetic cable can charge a laptop — most are built for phones. Here's what actually pushes enough power for a USB-C laptop.
| Product | Max Output | Laptop Charging | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volta MAX Cable | 240W | Yes | MacBook Pro 16" + phone, one cable |
| Volta Max Cable Only | 240W | Yes | Adding a second Max cable at your desk |
| Volta Zero 240W | 240W | Yes | Budget laptop-capable cable |
| USB-C & A Extension Cable | Pass-through | Depends on base cable | Extending reach from an outlet |
| Mag Adapter | Accessory | N/A | Adding magnetic tips to a cable you own |
| Volta Max Tips Only | Accessory | N/A | Replacement or spare tips |
How much wattage does your laptop actually need?
Most 13" ultrabooks charge fine on 65-100W. A 16" MacBook Pro or gaming laptop wants 140W or more to charge at full speed while in use. Volta's 240W-rated cables cover both ends without you needing to think about it — the cable negotiates power with your charger and laptop, so it only draws what's actually needed.
Your laptop's USB-C port isn't cheap to replace
A worn-out port is a motherboard repair on most laptops, not a $10 cable swap. Volta's magnetic tip stays seated in the port permanently — you're plugging and unplugging the magnetic joint, not the port itself, so the connector inside your laptop never takes the wear.

Built to hold a laptop cable's weight
Laptop charging cables are thicker and heavier than phone cables — a weak magnetic connection will drop mid-charge. We tested three magnet iterations before shipping: each one thicker than the last.

Magnetic Laptop Cable FAQs
Can a magnetic cable really charge a laptop at full speed?
Yes, if it's rated for it. Most magnetic cables cap out around 60W, which is fine for a phone but slow for a laptop. Volta's Max Cable, Max Cable Only, and Zero 240W are all rated up to 240W USB PD, enough for a MacBook Pro 16" or any high-draw ultrabook at full charging speed.
Will the magnetic connection stay attached while my laptop moves around?
Our magnetic tips are rated to hold up to 1,000g before disconnecting, which comfortably exceeds the pull of a laptop charging cable during normal use. It's designed to release under real tension, like an accidental tug, without straining the port.
Does a magnetic cable slow down data transfer on a laptop?
No. Volta's magnetic cables support both power delivery and standard USB data speeds through the same connector, so you can still use them for file transfer, not just charging.
Will a magnetic tip damage my laptop's USB-C port?
No, it protects it. The magnetic tip is what takes the daily wear from plugging and unplugging, not your laptop's port. Once the tip is seated, you're connecting to it magnetically, not forcing a connector in and out of the port itself.
Can I use the same magnetic cable for my laptop and my phone?
Yes. Swap the magnetic tip (USB-C, Lightning, or Micro-USB) and the same 240W cable works across your laptop, phone, and tablet, so you're not carrying a separate cable for each device.
